I am used to having a vegetable garden in MN, growing season May-Sept. I am wondering if it is possible to have this in Bozeman/Belgrade without a greenhouse.

Many years, we still have snow on the ground in May. The rule of thumb that I have heard is that there is only about a 3 month long growing season in this area. We have done ok with fast growing produce, but it limits your variety.

We've always had a green house. The growing season is just too short for a lot of things.

The Gallatin valley is rated as a 95 day USDA growing season, zone 4.
Last frost is about Fathers Day and first frost about Labor Day. Cool season plants will grow best. Check with the County Extension office for information about their master gardener program. Good luck.

Others are correct. Look for short-season varieties, such as 65-day tomatoes vs. 90-day ones. One season in Libby, I was able to grow harvestable cantaloupe with no greenhouse by choosing a dwarf short-season variety. Gardening in Montana is a fun (we think) challenge! :-)

Default up for the challenge

The short growing season there is what has kept me from pulling my roots in MN for the past 7 yrs, but I think it is time to make the big move. May look into employing some cold frames and maybe raised beds. I think I'm ready for the challenge! looking forward to it. Thanks for your input! umm, land, even small plot. THAT might be my biggest challenge.

Raised beds, yes! We use those too. Great, especially if you're gardening in rocky soil.

I use raised beds so I don't have to bend over so far.

It actually doesn't take much for a greenhouse. If you have a simple structure that can just beat the late frosts, you are well ahead of most folks. Ideally, a nice sun room on the side of the house makes a great difference, but even if you just set up one of those $300 plastic structures that they sell at Home Depot or Lowes gives you an advantage.

its really easy to throw up a temporary greenhouse with a couple wire cattle panels and some plastic sheeting. These are great because a permanent greenhouse can be a challenge to maintain fertility... temp gh can be moved for fallow time.

if you cant find info on them on the interwebs.... msg me and I'll let ya know some details

im over by Butte... we're lucky to get 70 days =)

just a small green house at the beginning of the season will do wonders-when summer finally kicks in there are a lot of hot sunny days. We have one of those cheap pop up greenhouses-buy tomato, squash plants and start them in there about Memorial day. They do pretty wel (in containers), and once we move them out we get a good crop.

Things like peas, lettuce do very well too.
