Jimj, I'm a NOC tech at Cutthroat atm. Starting pay is definitely lower than what Seattle would give.
Edit: Not that I'm complaining. I know jack about networks and I'm excited to get my foot in the door.

Big Sky Laser is a good company from what I hear, and we're in desperate need of good PC techs in the valley. A lot of our engineering businesses need people with skills to assemble PCs, and do setup/troubleshooting, but aren't full fledged engineers.

As an example, I just saw an ad in the local paper for a net admin with a long list of requirements, pay of $12-$15 an hour and you know they aren't going to give $15 willingly. This is a job that should pay almost double that for what they want.
When I first moved here I got to know the guy that did all the computer/server service for GNP both here and on the Canadian side. He was moving to CA to make more money and I talked with him about taking over his job here. This idea fizzled when he let me know the pay was $10 an hour and you only were allowed to work about 5 months out of the year, needless to say I didn't bother. Now you have the "geek squad" to compete with and even though they may not be the brightest they have marketing to die for. Companies still think or try to justify the low wages they pay by saying "the cost of living is cheaper here" which we all know is a load of hoo-haa but they still stand by it and I tell them when their networks are down or not working properly "you get what you pay for"!

For instance, campus is entirely 3com. rawr! Horribleness, then again... they're all sorts of incompotent. DM me for that story.

The issue is that geek squad charges some $70/hr for their services. Go into business for yourself at like $65/hr. As it is, I get calls routinely about jobs for $18/hr. I don't quit my day jobs because they're too sporadic for one, and generally require travel, but I like to drive... so not a big deal.
