Highway 191 between Bozeman and West Yellowstone questions (Dillon, Big Sky: RV park, motorhomes)

I'm driving from Bozeman down to Los Angeles to visit family on Tuesday. I figure that 191 down the Gallatin Canyon to West Yellowstone would be best for the initial leg of that trip, but was wonderng what the road conditions/construction/etc are like this time of year. Last time I drove down to West Yellowstone was last August, and construction just south of Big Sky made the drive between W.Yell. and Bozeman take nearly three hours.

Watch out for traffic tickets, they'll (the Fed's) ticket you for tiny speed infractions and there are places that the speed limit is quite low.

I'm taking a 33 foot RV and towing a dolly with a car on May 21st down highway 191 then on 20 to Yellowstone's Fishing Bridge RV Park as highway 14 is closed. Am I nuts? This is my first time in Montana and Wyoming but not the first time in mountains. Hope not to see too much snow and I'm hoping the road conditions will be good. Any Feedback please?

Highway 14 in Montana, or Wyoming????? 14 in Wyoming, from Burgess down the West side does remain closed. Not sure why they are dragging their feet this year. Although people drive motorhomes with cars behind have driven that road, it's changed a lot in the last 2 years. From Dayton up to Burgess junction used to be a bunch of switchbacks and a slight grade. They've straightened out a lot of it, but by straightening it out, they had to make the road steeper. So you now have miles of 8% grade and that tough on a motorhome even if you are not pulling a car behind.

Last time I did that route, the day started nice and clear but along the way it decided to throw a spring blizzard at us, and it took over four hours to crawl from somewhere south of Big Sky to West Yellowstone, and that was with chains on. Never again... Tho I got to see an amazing skating-job by two 18-wheelers, which wound up jackknifed against each other.

Next time I went down from Bozeman to L.A., I went by way of Twin Bridges to Dillon, and had no problems despite nasty weather just over my shoulder and towing a heavy trailer... Later heard that Hwy 191 was closed outright.

The Dillon route is a lot faster, as well as less likely to get hit by bad weather.

I remember making this post! Can't believe it's been three years.

I've driven this route from Montana to SoCal several times since I started this topic in 2008, and it is a surprisingly nice drive. I-15 is definitely one of the more scenic interstates top to bottom. Utah in particular is a very nice state to drive through, even if you stay on the freeways.

Didn't notice how ancient it was til later Yeah, there's a lot of different country to see all along the route. And some memorable badlands as you cross the corner of Arizona -- worth making sure you pass through there in daylight.
