Best to check out for themselves, but we actually love the Melbourne area-meaning all of Brevard County because if you live here you think of the whole community as home. People who cut down one or the other of the towns actually are shortsighted because long time residents have always enjoyed the best of the whole county. It all runs together and once you outgrow the HS rivalry you can see and enjoy the best of it all within a short drive.

Melbourne has a good art museum that your family might like getting involved in and we have an Art Festival in down town Melbourne that is rated one of the best in the nation. There is one in Indiatlantic also.
Viera has a lot of newer apartments and the shopping center but it is out by I-95 so would be a drive into town for everything else. To get an idea about apartments before you visit check out rentals.com or apartmentguide.com for all the areas you are thinking about.

Port Orange is expanding like crazy. Crime is low because of the forced demographics, which I think is great. There is a new shopping center and a theater on Williamson in Port Orange, it's probably the largest in the greater Daytona area. Beaches are close. Great community and family feeling in the city of Port Orange.

Volusia County is beautiful but, to us, very backwards. A lot of big fish in a small mud puddle. Gas taxes make gasoline here the most expensive around. A car dealer is the mayor of Daytona Beach. The Melbourne area has much more to offer -- more ethnic restaurants, more things to do, it's more progressive, has more people, and probably more crime. Port Orange is a nice area if you want a more laid back lifestyle. There is an arts community in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna, and DeLand.
