Anyone have a child attending any of these schools? I'm thinking of applying to Stevenson- however its in Merritt Island and I'm in W Melbourne- quite a drive. There's also Freedom 7 and another one I think in Cocoa. Do any parents live in a different town and drive kids to a "choice school?" BTW-- I'm not bussing my kids, however- I'm not opposed to driving them a little. Any info. would be great~

Stay in Viera/North Melbourne. Stevenson is a good school. Absolutely no school in Cocoa. I actually attended most of my grade schooling in Cocoa and can say that it's one of the worst areas as far as education.

Since the schools of choice concentrate on certain areas, your best bet is to match what aspect of education you want your children to get. Are you looking for school that teaches heavily in the arts or science or math.? Decide that and then decide on the school that is geared more to that.
Many of the regular schools rank high though, too. Have you tried getting them in West Side?

We are in West melbourne. I have a 2nd and 4th grader. They are zoned for Meadowlane up to 6th grade. I applied them to the West Melbourne school for science- we'll find out in March if they got in.

Why are you leaving Meadowlane? It's among the highest-rated schools. It would be hard to anticipate better outcomes for your kids at a different school.

(Central MS of course is a different story...)

No- we aren't leaving. My kids are going to start there next week. I just wanted to get my feelers out there and get opinions from knowledgable parents.

Default Yay Meadowlane!

I based my family's whole move to the Melbourne area around getting my daughter into Meadowlane. Loved it! Glad you're choosing to stay.

An option for when your older child moves into middle school/junior high years is West Shore:

West Shore Junior/Senior High School - Melbourne, Florida - FL - School overview

They are a magnet school, so you'd have to apply and try to get in against the numbers, but I hear great things about it. If we still lived in the area, we'd be just gearing up to apply this winter. Central isn't terrible, but they've had some problems there recently.

where are you now if I may ask? Yes- I know all about West Shore. My daughter is in 4th grade but it's never too early to get your "ducks in a row." We are looking forward to starting anew.
