The job location is right next to the Melbourne airport on the south side.
When I phone interviewed, West Melbourne was suggested as an area to
look.

I am single and would like to be near the 30-35 yo dating scene. I also
want to live in a low-crime area so I won't come home from work to find
my plasma TV stolen (or worse). I was thinking a condo on Satellite Beach
but I wonder if there is crime there. My other thought is to rent a house
in W Melbourne. I am looking to rent for $1200-$1600. I am not into the
bar scene and rarely drink.

I was looking at craigslist and realtor dot com for rentals. Are there any other
sites I should check for rentals?

We used to just call realtors years ago because it is easier to get things fixed if you rent a home that a realty company manages than to get the out of state owners to work on their homes.
The only other thing I would suggest would be the online classifieds for the local paper.

If you like the beach why not look around Indialantic Beach? Satellite Beach would be a much longer commute. Where Indialantic is pretty much a straight shot over the causeway.
I lived in West Melbourne years ago, and IMO it's more of a family environment.

Well I've been looking and it seems that the rentals in Indialantic, Melbourne
Beach, and Indian harbor are older, rented furnished, or rented for the only a
short lease time frame. I will probably need to look on the mainland for a
condo or small home that is newish.

Do realtors charge a fee to look at rentals?

we were never charged for anything except maybe $25 for a credit check when we actually rented a house. The home owner using the realtor to oversee their home pays a fee each month, so when you have a problem you deal with the agent and they deal with the home owner to get the repairs made etc.

Thanks to all for helping out..

I am in touch with a very nice realtor who will be showing me rentals next week. I settled on either
West Melbourne as it will be close to work or on the island if I can find a nice enough condo in a quiet
area.
