I am looking at condos in both places.
Merritt Island sounds great, but worried about evacuations. How often do they occur? Are there huge differences between the areas? if so, what?
Rockledge is less expensive and I imagine would not require evacuation at the same levels of Merritt Island?
Is home/renters/auto insurance pretty much same in all areas?
Schools in both seem good.
How about crime? I have a 15 year old daughter that will likely be walking around on her own, are there drug dealers and gangs in this area? It may be a funny question to some, but I live currently in Baltimore County Maryland and have drug dealers next door to me, up the street and gang shootings in the city.

I have a feeling that what many of you refer to as high crime areas, may be different to what I am used to. I have to believe that any part of Brevard County is better than any part of Baltimore Your opinions please?

I would vote Merritt Island over Rockledge though depending upon where in Rockledge you're looking. The west side of Rockledge closer to Viera would trump Merritt Island in that case. In terms of evacuations they rarely occur and the last I can remember was in 2004. Crime by and large isn't an issue in Merritt Island (or Rockledge) beyond nuisance crimes and haven't heard of any gang activity. If you're shopping condos, homeowners insurance is included in your monthly association fee. Car insurance you'll find much lower than where you currently live.

After leaving Baltimore, either place will fit what you are looking for!! Home owners insurance will be cheaper in Rockledge than the Island. Evacuations are not a problem, the area really isn't congested, so on the really OFF chance of having one, it wouldn't be a problem and are extremely rare. All of the insurance will be cheaper than what you are used to. If you want to come a little farther north, Titusville and Port St. John are excellent places to live and raise a family!
