I do like the historic area of Eau Gallie. My daughter and I go to the Eau Gallie library often and we usually get stuck behind the school bus on Pineapple Ave on the way there. I have noticed that all the kids getting off the bus are met by their parents. They don't appear to be well to do, but they care about the kids.
There is a mixture of poor, middle class and well to do in the area. Most of the well to do (or upper middle class) seem to be on the river.
There are a some homeless people milling around due to the library, but in my opinion it's no more dangerous than Palm Bay.
You should check out the area before you commit to any leases.
There's also a couple of good restaraunts in the area; Squid Lips, Bonefish Willys, Mustards Last Stand (excellent hotdogs), etc.

Your reference to being as safe as Palm Bay.....actually read in the weekly paper 2 weeks ago that Palm Bay is actually rated 2nd SAFEST city in Brevard County. It was based on crimes per # of residents and the solving of those crimes. Of all things the worse city was Indian Harbor Beach .

That's funny you say this, because PB is far safer than Melbourne ever will be. One of the negatives of that area is the Booker T neighborhood, which is a constant crime, drug & violence infested area. The bad part is that that influence has moved over into all the neighbor hoods surrounding Booker T which does include old downtown Eau Gallie district. Yes, there is quite a bit of homeless/transients in that area, but that is kinda moot because all of Melbourne is infested with these transients, where as Palm Bay it is rare to see this.

Yes, I also agree that you should always check out the area prior to a commitment to moving as LABART posted.
