My husband was offered a job up in the Melbourne area. We are considering it but have no idea what is like there. How is it there raising children? We have visited melbourne/palm bay many years ago and it seemed to be a very quiet small town. How are the schools? We are looking into the whole the area not just melbourne. We brieftly looked into west melbourne and saw some fairly cheap new consturction housing there. We currently live in the fort lauderdale area, we are looking for cheaper housing and better schools for the children.
How are the schools in the area? Do kids tend to go to their assigned areas? Here in SFL kids are sent to schools all over the place because most of them arent very good or are ghetto. ITs always been weird to me that kids dont go to their neighborhood schools since I didnt grow up that way. What are some communties that have young families. We are in our early 30s.

Schools in brevard are good on the whole. The county is ranked in the top 10 for schools in FL. I'd say palm bay might have the weakest schools. Better areas for schools would be Viera, West Melbourne and Cocoa Beach/Satellite Beach and Indiatlantic.

Not sure what "cheaper housing" means, but, Satellite Beach/Indian Harbor Beach/Indialantic are probably the best areas for families -- Best high school in that area is Satellite Beach. Viera is very good, but, has gotten pretty pricey. Palm Bay and West Melbourne leave much to be desired in schools and family amenities. (If, for example, your husband is working at Harris, fighting the PB traffic each day will be a 'real bear.'

Viera can have pretty rough traffic near I-95. Also, West Melbourne schools are decent although I would rank Viera and the beachside higher than them.
