Is Palm Coast a good place to live for retirees. We are not looking for a retirement community. We want to down size from a 4 bedroom 3 1/2 bath home with large yard.

We want a small home with 2 bedrooms but not a mobile home. We are looking for a safe place to live. We are looking at Titusville, Cocoa, Rockledge, Melbourne, Palm Bay area.

We have family in Merritt Island and want to live in the general area. Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks in advance!

Palm COAST is in Flagler county, north of Volusia county/Daytona Beach. Palm BAY is south of Melbourne and Merritt Island in Brevard County.

There are many places to buy or rent in Palm Bay. What is your budget? Of course there are places to avoid as is the case with most cities.

I think it would be a pretty decent place to get a nice little house as a retiree. There is already a sizable retiree population living here already, and much of the local political decisions are made with retirees in mind.

Palm Bay has all the essential shopping you could want. If not, you can simply drive 10 minutes northward to Melbourne. Merritt Island would be about a 35 minute trip on the highway. Since traffic isn't bad anywhere you go in the county, driving is relatively a breeze. There are all sorts of activities for people, such as golf, fishing, Zumba, bingo, air boat rides, the beach, and restaurants both chain and mama & papa. Most church denominations are represented, there are several dog parks within an easy drive away, and the local schools usually put on some pretty entertaining sports events. The Melbourne King Center even gets some great national acts to watch!

There isn't too much of a difference in the quality of life from city to city in Brevard. I would advise you to think about what places you are going to visit frequently, and find something within a reasonable drive. Some areas in south Palm Bay can take 15 + minutes to get to the highway from.

Furthermore, in case you haven't read a previous post about it, getting home owner's insurance within a few miles of the beach (depending on the insurance company) is crazy. Very few insure at a reasonable rate, and most will not at all. Before you start looking at homes, you might want to contact local insurance companies for areas in question.

Palm Bay get's a pretty undeserved negative reputation as trashy. There are a few pockets of neighborhoods that are poor, but nothing unsafe. Usually crime consist of bored teenagers committing vandalism, which is anywhere. There isn't a part of the city I would refuse to live in, unlike Melbourne, Cocoa, and Titusville. All in all, Brevard county in general is a nice place to retire. My biggest complaint with Brevard is its public transportation. The bus system is extremely sub-par. If you will require the bus to get to your destinations, Melbourne is much more favorable to Palm Bay in that respect.

Will you be able to visit the area soon? If your coming from up north, I recommend you visit in the summer to get an idea of the humidity and heat. You can always cool off at the beach!

Palm Bay isn't Merritt Island!

You will be able to tell a great deal about Palm Bay by simply driving through the area... and obviously would not buy or rent without looking. We lived in the Melbourne / beach area for 27-years through 2011. I would definitely not simply BUY a Florida retirement home anywhere, much less in Palm Bay, without renting in the area for at least a year and getting 'comfortable' with the area first.
