We are looking to relocate to Florida. We are retired educators raising our two young grandchildren ages two and four. I like what I am reading (so far) about Satellite including the A rating schools. Is this area kid friendly or mostly retired people or a nice mix? Is there convenient shopping, medical complexes? The intention is to come down and take a look.I'm just trying to learn as much as I can prior to a visit and hopefully eliminate areas that would not be right for our family. Any insight you can share would be greatly appreciated. Enjoy your sunny day !

It's still very family-friendly, although the mix is higher on the aging-in-place demographic than it was 20-30 years ago. As far as shopping and medical services -- if you expand the zone to include everything between Patrick AFB (South Patrick Shores) and Eau Gallie Boulevard (Indian Harbour Beach), you can get the basics. But, for example, you'll have to go across the causeway to find a Target or a Walmart that's been remodeled since the '80s. Same for hospitals. But you'll have Publix, Walgreens, some restaurants, the everyday type stuff.

You'll find that for a lot of people, everything from Melbourne Beach up to the air force base is generically called "beachside" and you may not end up caring about the actual city you end up in, aside from the implications for school zones.

Satellite Beach is a great, widely diverse community with excellent schools and a terrific, friendly atmosphere. It's size and congestion is limited by the ocean and waterways, leaving it with a small town feel. We lived there for 40+ years and just moved to North Florida 2-years ago to get closer to kids/grandkids. If not for the latter, we would move back to Satellite in a heartbeat!
