I just looked up the Brevard Co. Teachers salary scale. Wow! The salaries are low and the support position wages are a joke. Is this common among all fields or just education?

That is an excellent question. I have been focusing mostly on Brevard as a possible relocation so I am not sure. But FL overall does have a reputation for poor teacher salaries. Sometimes teacher scales are an indication of the overall pay of the area and cost of living and sometimes it is not.

Pretty much in the middle.....starting salaries for teachers in Florida range from about $31,000-$44,000 with just a BS in Ed degree depending on the county.

Florida Teacher Salaries

The salary has tripled since I came down in the 70s. ;-) I used to say I got paid in sunshine. It made it very easy for me to be a SAHM with my kids for many years and decide to sub instead of full time teach when I
returned to teaching.

Most jobs are lower paying down here as compared to the national average. You don't pay State Tax on your income, so that helps a little.

I know in Vermont the teacher's salary average is $54,480. Unlike Florida, it's not spread around evenly in the state. While Florida has a fairly narrow range, VT's goes from $41k to over $72k. This was long After they did their redistribution thing for schools. But we have state income taxes, and just about everything from breathing to housing is much more here.

the lower sales and property taxes also help IMO. Gas is cheaper than up north (outside of maybe Jersey). Property taxes are lower than up north or TX.

I was just thinking....we don't have the state income tax but we do get hit with a" hurricane charge" from the insurance companies.....house and car both and even the telephone companies and FPL tack on some hurricane tax(surcharges)...... and we all get charged to help insure the homes that insurance companies won't insure. Ummmm do people in Tornado states, earthquake states, etc. have the add on surcharges like we do? Has anyone in other states had your homeowner's double or triple in 1 year? Have you ever had your insurance drop you even though you never had a claim because they fled the state?

The NEA has done a pretty comprehensive study of the national and state-by-state schools, including teacher salaries.
