I am relocating to MElbourne, FL and would like to know how the grass grows during the winter months (Nov-Feb). Do the lawns in this area require mowing during the winter months? Also, what is the going rate for regular lawn service. I am moving from Indiana so I am not accustomed to year round lawn care. Thanks in advance!

No generally the grass is very slow growing especially if the temps drop really low and don't start growing again until around April.

Usually need to mow once or twice a month in the winter months especially if you continue to water to keep green all winter...... unless you get a frost or a longer period of cold weatherWe haven't really had a good frost in several years. During the rest of the year sometimes twice a week. This year we mowed once a week in November but only mowed twice in December. It is January and it is looking like we need to mow this week.

If you are thinking about hiring lawn care it is usually a year contract between $60-$90 for just cutting the lawn...trimming bushes etc. is extra. They usually mow once a week during most of the year, but once a month during winter unless it needs it more. You pay the same for winter months as summer.

St. Augustine grass does grow in the winter months slowly and an occasional trim about once every five weeks is fine from mid Nov to March. We paid $50 a month when snow-birding.
