Update: talked to a crabber yesterday who said that on Monday this week his crab traps were full of healthy live stone crabs and some blue crabs. Also talked to people who have caught trout and redfish in the Banana River this past week. The fish kill was massive but it appears that it wasn't absolute. There are still schools of mullet visible and the water in some places is looking a little less orange. There is a glimmer of a hint of hope.

It seems like there is a whole lotta media hype about this brown algae. I know a few years ago we used to have an issue of red tide which affected the ocean. The red tide is actually red algae that starves the oxygen of fish in the ocean the same way the brown algae is affecting the lagoon. I don't remember there being a whole lot of press about that going on. That was really nasty and sad to see when there was huge groupers and 4 foot long eels washing up onto the sand all along the coastline.
I guess the press coverage is due to the fact a lot of new people have moved to the area. Boy...if that red tide comes back...that'll be a strong news day.
I hope it doesn't...its horrible stuff.
Google it...if you want more info.

Banana River has improved this week. Water is not as rusty looking. There were pelicans and sea gulls diving on several schools of bait roaming nearshore in the river in south Cocoa Beach yesterday.
