Hi all, my husband will be getting out of the Navy soon. We were planning on moving to the Melbourne/Viera area. We kind of had our hearts set on the area until we read more about the crime rate in the area. Is this area really that bad?? Thanks in advance for any information!

Melbourne, Florida, violent crime, on a scale from 1 (low crime) to 100, is 75. Violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The US average is 41.4. Melbourne, Florida, property crime, on a scale from 1 (low) to 100, is 58.

I'd try another city but most of Florida outside the IntraCoastal Waterway (read:inland) is bad. Because the development between the Atlantic and the Waterway is mostly rich and influential crime is low in these areas but almost impossible to afford.

If you are that afraid of the area I would say pass on it. Having lived here 40 years though, I can tell you

1. If you don't do drugs, buy or sell, you probably will not be effected by crime.
2. If you, your, husband, children are not doing something illegal you probably will be fine.
3. If you or your family members do not mess with someone elses' wife/husband/significant other, you probably will be fine.
4. If no one in the family has a violent temper and crazy enough to shoot you, you will probably be fine.
5. If you don't mouth off to others and think you are the guardian of the world, you probably won't make someone hate you enough to do anything to harm you.
6. If you take regular precautions like locking your house and car doors, you will probably be fine.
7. If you don't carry thousands of $$ in your purse or pocket and take out a big wad of money to pay for stuff at the store to show it off , you probably will be fine.
8. If you don't walk down a dark street in a known risky area after midnight you will probably be fine.

Crime happens everywhere even in little bitty towns in farm communities up North. Been here for 40 years in dreaded Palm Bay-crime center of the world if you listen to people who don't live here, but never had any problems. Just like in every community the people doing crimes is less than 20 % of the population and those 20% tend to do most of their violent crimes against each other . The 20 % tend to be in the news over and over while the rest of the people living there are enjoying life.

Brevard County is a family oriented area that is really a pretty friendly, safe area to live. Some years if you look at the crime rate the beach communities have higher numbers than mainland areas because 1 murder in a town of 5000 people is a higher number on the charts than 1 murder in a town of 120,000. You have to take statistics in perspective to population of an area.

Well said Rabflmom! Crime finds you if you entice it, no matter where you live.

agree with everything said here. I would also add that it's likely a majority of the crime is concentrated in a few ares that just need to be avoided, University Ave at Route 1 for instance has a reputation for not being a great area.

The area is doing extremely well economically with a lot of new business coming this way. Real estate prices have been moving steadily higher as these businesses hire from across the country (Northrup Grumman is the prime example for that phenomenon). It's far from the ghost towns that were predicted when the Shuttle program ended.

For what it's worth, your link to crime rates only shows crime within the city limits of Melbourne. That's just a fraction of what comprises Melbourne-the-general-area, and most of the desirable "Melbourne" residential areas are not within the city limits. If you look up those other places -- Viera, West Melbourne, the beachside communities, etc. -- you'll see far lower violent crime rates.

Hello,
I need your kind guidance. I am a student at FIT and will be living along either Cornell Avenue or Rutgers Avenue, Melbourne Fl.
Please advice about crime in the area. What are the safety concerns in this area ?
Am happy reading your post.

@mahesh62 I would call the local police station to get information on those areas. You can also search the internet for "Melbourne Crime" and websites will come up (we are not allowed to share websites on here) where you can put in an address and get an idea of what types of crime have occurred in the area, and how often it has happened. Hope this helps! Good luck at FIT. It is an amazing school!
