Retirement is still a few years out; maybe 5 or so. I am likely to retire alone and I am not the most socially adept person around, so I am drawn to the idea of a reasonably large 55+ community with a lot of clubs and activities. The reason for wanting a large one is for variety of people/interests. Sun City Center is a large Tampa community with prices starting fairly low; that's for smallish older units but they are actual regular constructed buildings, not manufactured housing. They also have nicer units for significantly more. But I am not crazy about Tampa; I like the Space Coast better. So are there any similar communities in the Space Coast area?

Even a "closest thing to that I know of is" reply would be nice...

several along the Space Coast, but none are close to the size of Sun City Tampa. Heritage Isle is the largest at 1500 homes, and I think a new one called Bridgewater is planned for about 900 homes...Indian River Colony Club is about 770 homes, then it goes down from there. The 55places website mentioned above might be very helpful for you....

If not wanting manufactured housing is just a preference instead of a deal-breaker, that would open up some other possibilities. But for the peace of mind during hurricane season alone, since you'll be a year-round resident and may need to shelter in place, I'd stick with regular construction too.

Yes, I know; I wrestle with that decision because there are a few manufactured home communities that would otherwise fit the bill. Some have some really nice amenities; true resorts. I might do that at least sightly inland

You probably should go benchmark the Villages - near Orlando - even though it is not near a coast. That is the biggest retirement community in the US.

Yeah, I know about it. It's pretty pricey and as you noted, not very near a coast. I have given some consideration to going that far inland though; I would feel better about the possibility of a manufactured home. The idea of strolling the beach fairly often makes me wonder if I wouldn't regret it if I went far in though. If I were where I could get there in a short amount of time, I would do it a lot more often. This assumes I stay healthy enough to enjoy it.
