Florida Building code for concrete block homes requires rebar(all the way from top to bottom) and poured concrete on the corners, next to each window and door and every 4 feet. So there is a lot of rebar and poured concrete.

Well we must be getting poor information . Is this true for all concrete homes or from a certain year forward? I knew the fema standards for flood changed after 2002 and that is something to look for as far as older homes and flood planes.

Not sure exactly when it started - but it was at least as early as 2002.

Not sure where you are located but here on the beach in the center of the state, I do not see those codes happening. Our house was built in 2006 and does not have rebar top to bottom. I do not see it happening on the new builds that are going up in 2019 either.

[quote=Skeens84;55036831]Well I think after all the feedback, my camper idea is not a good one.

I’ve been talking with ICF builders who certify homes up to 200 mph winds. Most of the block homes we looked at are not reinforced concrete only concrete block. Meaning no grout and rebar inside. If we
Could build an ICF home, I would have not trouble staying on the mainland side during a storm and ensuring power by haven’t a whole house generator and buried propane tank.

If you decide to build an ICF home I'd be very interested in hearing about who you choose & how the process works out for you. I think they are a great concept!
