We just got a letter from FL DOT about work on A1A in Cocoa Beach. They are going to construct mid-block pedestrian crossings in 4 locations between St. Lucie Lane and Cocoa Isles Blvd. I hope these aren't the flashing yellow lights like the ones in Satellite Beach that were ignored and the young girl was hit and killed trying to cross. That's not much of a pedestrian safety improvement.

As I understand it they will be the same and they will cause accidents, hopefully, no fatalities. I don't think the research on this has been as thorough as it needs to be but DOT has a history of doing some crazy stuff. The lane narrowing dividers in Satellite have the lanes too narrow for big trucks to squeeze through and every single one of them has been hit multiple times. Please be careful if you use these mid-street crossings and don't trust that the flashing lights will be seen by drivers.

Our place is on St. Lucie Lane so I know how difficult it is to cross even with the light. People speed, ignore red lights and generally act like buttholes about pedestrians. I can't imagine trying to cross at one of these mid-block crossings, especially after dark.

There is a public meeting on this proposal on 1/12/21. I don't Facebook, but you can get the link to sign up to virtually attend the public meeting on FL DOTs FB page.

Well, the public hearing was last night and it doesn't seem like many people want the crossings. Even the Cocoa Beach officials oppose the project.
