I just "glanced" at this article, thanks for sharing. I will read in more "detail" once I have had my morning "cafè"...

But I do luv this statement:

Palm Bay City Council recently voted in a 4-1 motion to allocate over $5 million in ARPA funding to help alleviate homelessness and provide options for affordable housing.

Here in Cave Spring, Virginia (county) we have ZERO homeless and/or panhandling versus other locations nearby.

Roanoke, Virginia (city) in spite of having the Rescue Mission, some "homeless" refuse to use it due to their RULES.

Well business owners got tired of the FILTH and losing biz and FINALLY as of JANUARY 2022, it is ILLEGAL to camp out on the SIDEWALKS and panhandle. Yay!!!

In ending, it is a GOOD thing Palm Bay is TRYING, I would hate for us to NOT feel safe there.

I MAY "drive" to the CITY now that this LAW is in effect. The ONLY thing is that FINING the homeless with a misdeamnor??? Hmmm, lol, are they to use their ILLEGAL panhandling to PAY??? And when they get out, where do you think they will be going, back to where they were ARRESTED.

There has to be some other way to FIX this!

It is going to only get WORST as more businesses LAY OFF. Any of us could be "homeless" and the HELP that use to be there has DECREASED due to funding.

PREVENTION is critical = AFFORDABLE housing

Hello! I live in the NE part of Palm Bay. We are homebodies too, except that we have a 10 years old boy. Our neighborhood has an old feeling but in a good way. A few neighbors wave and people walk their dogs, but I never see kids my son's age. I wish I would have searched more on this, but we came from the NorthWest side of the country when things got really bad, really fast (covid ) and we had to leave for our son's safety and future.
Overall, we like it. We love our house and wish to make friends soon. We work long hours and have little time to socialize. It's difficult too because we are a bi-racial family and this complicated things even more. It's crazy but true.
All shopping, doctors, and parks, is within 10-15 minutes. Some are closer. The beach is about 30 minutes.

P.S. I have no idea that Palm Bay had a bad reputation with people from Melbourne. Maybe that's why when I say we live in PB they run? lol
and now I worried after reading that they are meth heads selling drugs in PB. Gosh where can I take my son to keep him away from drugs and bad stuff????

Hi, unfortunately drugs are everywhere unless the community they are in does something about it. You did good, moving to offer your family a more POSITIVE environment. Take your time, explore and soon you will be fitting in somewhere. COVID is not helping, but we have to have HOPE things will settle down soon. I BELIEVE in the Law Of Attraction and finally made time to practice it after having a "meltdown" this month/lol. Yes, got totally frustrated about my Retirement Bucket List being on hold while we deal with all the mess this year has brought us. Guess what! It is working!!!! Keep your head up and never give up. Smile, say hello when you are out and about. You never know who you may meet, get to know. Try to find activities that you and your family enjoy and make time for them. I hope to return to Palm Bay in May 2023. Was suppose to when I retired July 2020. Yes, in the midst of all the craziness. Hang in there

I honestly barely notice the homeless. It could be b/c I grew up in Orlando area. Homeless people are always around there, I see a few begging for money by Target on Palm Bay rd but havent noticed a crazy amount. We live in SW Palm Bay & like the area. I hate the roads, not sure who drew these out but they are terrible. I just tell myself the canals are the reason for this nonsense. I’ve heard Palm Bay gets a bad rep b/c it’s the most diverse city in Brevard. Our neighborhood is pretty diverse. A mix of military, former military & civilians. Folks wave at each other & we’ve gotten to know our neighbors. Being in SW, I wish we had a Walmart marketplace closer. Outside of having to drive 20 min to Target, we are enjoying Palm Bay!

I did not realize there is no Walmart. Surprised as they drove all the Winn Dixies and Alberstsons out of my neighborhood in Orlando. This was several years ago. They use to be "cheap" but now it seems the prices went up as soon as they took over. But I do like their Supercenters. My daughter luvs Target. I am not a fan of them. Glad to hear Palm Bay still has that "family" atmosphere. When I lived there, we all knew each other. Friendly bunch. I hope to return as soon as those housing prices go down. I am "crying".....

Looking for the hood? You go to Melbourne to find that. There are less expensive areas in Palm Bay and areas where the houses were built before 1980 but most of the town is much newer. Most of the town is family oriented. Our shopping centers are not on Babcock St. and I really can't remember the last time I was in that area of town.

BTW the shopping center he drove through has some empty stores next to Publix because that Publix is going to be closed this fall for a complete rebuild.

He could have driven East on Babcock to show the thriving Harris Corp complex or on Malabar West to show where more stores are. We have a one of a kind Walmart on Malabar for example. No gray box store fit into Palm Bay planning. LOL Ours is blue-has porches etc. And we have a beautiful college complex East Florida State, a cool community pool etc. Bayside community is not so ho hum as the NE section he was in.

We are basically a sleeping community, though. With Brevard County having towns and cities that share boundaries(one side of street Mlbourne, West Melbourne, and Palm Bay on the other side you live, work, and play in all of them, including the beach towns.

I have been living here since the 70s when Palm Bay was only 19,000 people and now there are 100,000+ more people so something must be a draw for all these people to choose Palm Bay. We liked the fact that we are spread out and used to have empty lots around us but that sure is changing now. Still quiet, still friendly neighborhoods all over the city.

Hi Rabflmom, luv your feedback!!! I cannot wait to see your Walmart. And yes, you would have thought Harris would be featured. I use to work there before getting laid off when my daughter was about 10. She now works there. Grateful she is working from home. Even with that precaution, she still caught COVID. But it was quick and over with due to her being home. Decent company to work for. The challenge for me will be missing the "open" space I had in Palm Bay when I return Lived in both Melbourne and Orlando, hated it. Palm Bay is home.....

Harris hasn't been doing the every 10 year or so lay offs like they used to. My husband got laid off/terminated because they outsourced his job just before our youngest started college. It is still a good place to work. It is much bigger than it used to be.

Remember the Harris Christmas parties? They stopped doing those the last few years, too.

It really is hard to find families who have not had covid here. My DIL is a doctor and she has gotten it twice even though she has the boosters. Kids at school, her at the hospital, and my son always has someone out at the grocery store so it is constant exposure. Some how my son who works at Disney has managed to avoid it even though a lot of tourists have it while here or take it home after catching it here. His regional manager got stuck in Spain in June because he had to have a negative test to get back in the USA. My son has even had CMs walk into his office without masks to report they won't be in because they have covid and he has managed to work without catching it.

There are still areas that are pretty open here in Palm Bay. Parts of the city with city water are a plus and sell higher. Lots around us that we could have bought in 2019 for $5000 have sold for $35,000+ to the companies building the houses.
