Have you driven A1A lately? A couple years ago they added center islands with flashing lights at cross walks. I have not driven North in Indialantic , Indian Harbor, Satellite etc lately until I went over for launch yesterday. Now on all those cross walks there is a 3ft pole sticking out of the ground on the center line between the 2 Northbound or the Southbound lanes. There are no lights or reflectors on these posts and there is no yellow reflecting paint on them so they show up from a distance or at night. I can only imagine they were put there as a deterrent to keep people from changing lanes when the car in front of them stops for people in the crosswalk,
With the island and the pole it makes for narrower lanes at every cross walk . There are no signs letting you know a designated crosswalk is ahead so do not pass. Following someone you may not see this crosswalk ahead of time. For all the big 4 door pick ups and delivery trucks it really seems quite narrow.
It looks like many cars have hit everyone of those poles sticking out of the ground and that we are just waiting for a bad accident to happen and for the city or state to be sued.

Just want to say if you head to the beach watch out for the poles in the middle of the lanes. in all the little towns over there.

You are correct. Those poles and lights have been up for quite some time. We head southbound from Cocoa Beach fairly often to one of our places, Nippon Thai. When you get past the base, there is a warning sign about the crosswalk lights ahead. It is blinking which inevitably slows down traffic as the initial thought is there is an activated crosswalk, but the first one is just a warning of what's to come. But further down, the real ones appear and they are rather intrusive to the lanes.
I noticed these lighted crosswalks all over Clearwater and the costal roads along the beach on the west coast of Florida. The difference, fewer intrusive poles in the street. There the lighted markers where on the outer edges of the road or on the median in the middle.
Not sure why on our coast, they added the street poles. Bad design for sure.

Those center poles have been replaced many times since they were first installed. Very poor design and creates an incredibly narrow passageway for larger vehicles to get through.
