Could someone indicate the areas in the county that are safe/not safe to live? I'll be looking for a room for rent to start, after which I'll be seeking something long-term. But for now, it would be nice to know where to look/not look.

Once, when I was considering a place in Homestead, someone drew me shaded areas in that city of what was good and not good. Something like that for the Melbourne area would be ideal.

I would rule out Titusville/Cocoa/Mims or basically northern Brevard in general. However, these areas would still probably be safer than Homestead.

The Eau Gallie Blvd corridor from I-95 to the Intracoastal, north to White Road and south to Ellis Road is an area to avoid largely. The entire area of Melbourne from Lake Washington northward is nice typically as is the southeast side below Ellis Road. Melbourne Beach is very desirable if able to find housing there.

Highly desirable is the area called Viera, either East or West plus Suntree. Most of Rockledge is a nice place to live, but avoid at all costs Cocoa. Now, Cocoa Village is very nice and Cocoa Beach is fine, but touristy. Merritt Island is mostly nice. I don't live Beachside, so I cannot speak of specificities on MI. Anywhere on A1A is desirable (Satellitle Beach, Indiatlantic, Melbourne Beach and so on).

Avoid west of Courtenay on Merritt Island. The rest of the Island is basically nice.

Visit the area and take a ride around. We settled in Merritt Island, east of Courtenay, off of North Banana River Drive. Plenty of nice places around here and really nice if waterfront. So many areas in Brevard are nice. If you visit, you will see for yourself. Satellite Beach also nice and family friendly. Coca Beach can get touristy but has a lot of fun spots to dine and wine. It really depends on your needs.
