Hello,

I'm a 27 year old guy moving out to start a job in Melbourne. As I've only spent about 1.5 days in the area (for my interview), I am in serious need of advice. I'm very interested in living on the beachside, from Melbourne Beach to the Cocoa Beach area. My main concern right now is that I want to pick a town that has some things my age going on. By this I mean: small shopping/restaurant/bar areas that I may walk or bike to in order to mingle with people. I'm certainly excited to be leaving a "college town" in the sense that I will be excited to have neighbors who do not keep me awake until 3 am frequently. However, I am worried that I will be house-locked and not be able to go to a bar, have a beer, and chat with people. Since I know next-to-nothing about the areas I've mentioned (and the ones in between), I would really appreciate any advice people can give me on this! From what I have gathered by reading things on the internet, it seems like Cocoa Beach may be the best fit so far, since it has a nice pier with restaurants and things, and apparently some small shopping/bar area. However, as I mentioned I will be working in Melbourne, so Cocoa Beach would be the longest commute (google maps says ~40 min?). Please help

Thanks!

You might want to consider Satellite Beach. It's close to the fun of Cocoa Beach but not far from Melbourne (depending on where in Melbourne you are working).

Thank you for the reply. I will be working pretty close to the Melbourne airport. From Cocoa Beach to the job is about 20 miles and google earth tells me the commute would be about 40 minutes. Does this sound about right? How miserable (or not!) is traffic typically? I used to work in Los Angeles, and driving the 4.5 miles to my job took about 30 minutes. If it's something like that, then I suppose Cocoa Beach would be too far and out of the question . Thanks again, I appreciate the help!

You're welcome.
Another area to consider, since you are working at the airport, is Indialantic. You can walk/bike to the beach and just zip over the Melbourne causeway to get to the airport. You would have to drive to get to Cocoa Beach, but there are a few things to do right there. A few things to consider about anywhere on the beachside is (1) it's more expensive than the mainland, and (2) be careful driving - there are a lot of cops. Hope this helps.
