Hello. I am from a small town in Michigan where there is virtually no crime. I have fallen in love with a house in Canaveral Groves in Cocoa. However, when I look up demographics for the area I am very concerned. Is the crime really bad in this area, or is the zipcode picking up other bad areas of Cocoa that mess up the crime stats?
I have two small children, and no matter how beautiful the house is I will hate it if I need to worry about my children not being safe. Any advise or information would be greatly appreciated

My husband and I looked in the Canaveral Grove area. Not a place we wanted to live. You have a nice house next to a few "winners". Not the greatest of area. At least not to us. Not sure on the crime.

Default Not the greatest area

There are many great communities on the Space Coast but Cocoa may not be the best choice. If you look at the crime statistics on the City Data forum, the rates are about twice the US average. There are a lot of other choices. Melbourne comes to mind. It is always best to buy and settle in what is considered to be a more desireable community.

According to this very site Coco's crime rate is nearly four times the national average. This is because the racial demographics show a population comprised of 32% blacks. It's hard to argue with the facts and accusing those who state the facts of being "racist" won't lower the crime rates one percent.

I lived in Canaveral Groves for 18 years of my life and have never once been a victim of crime. It's not even in Cocoa city limits, so don't pay any attention to the crime statistics. Obviously, Cocoa has some bad parts, aka the Clearlake area, but Canaveral Groves is nowhere near it. The only thing you'd have to worry about in Canaveral Groves are the rednecks with their four wheelers and shotguns and whatnot, but pretty much everyone there is safe, rednecks included. It's a very nice, simple, quiet area to live. I miss it.

I realize this post is over a year old, but this comment is so ignorant I had to address it. The amount of minorities in an area does not automatically mean it going to have more crime. My grandma lived in an predominately balck community in Houston for almost 60 years and never once had to deal with a break in.

My parents lived out in the predominantly white community of Pearland, TX for just over a decade, and we had our houses and cars broken into on more than one occasion, and one of our neighbors was shot in his own driveway when somebody tried to steal his bike from right in front of him. All of this happened in the "peaceful suburbs".

Statistics like "32% blacks" are completely meaningless. Statistics mean nothing to the individual who as to go through these things.

Canaveral groves is very nice. You should not be lookng at crime stats for Cocoa. While the mailing address may say Cocoa, canaveral groves is not in Cocoa it's a part of unincorporated brevard county district 2. The people in the groves are vastly different than those in Cocoa.

Canaveral Groves is a very nice area. Most of it is middle class and rural, and the northern part west of 95 would be considered upper class. Clearly most of the people posting here have never been there if they are comparing it to Cocoa. It has nothing to do with Cocoa, other than as a mailing address, since Canaveral Groves is not officially an incorporated city of its own.

It doesn't matter what Cocoa's crime rate is. The poster is asking about Canaveral Groves (which incidentally is almost 100% white), although race has nothing to do with it.
