Satellite Beach is (or was, the last time I was there) almost purely residential, but it's a great beach. There are few amenities in Satellite Beach. Melbourne Beach is a little busier with a wider range of amenities. Neither of these areas can really compare to the south Tampa neighborhoods where just about everything is nearby, unless the proximity to the beach is your primary motivation for considering the Brevard towns. If you want a sleepy beach town, Satellite beach would be right up your alley. If you want the convenience of city living in a suburban setting, the south Tampa neighborhoods are hard to beat.

Also consider that the imminent shut down of the shuttle program is going to effect jobs in the Space Coast even if you don't plan to work at the Cape. Tampa has a much more diversified job market which should bounce back more quickly, but I'm afraid that Brevard is going to have a difficult time recovering.

I also looked at the space coast & Daytona areas in comparison to Tampa Bay when considering relocation. If I was going to stay retired, I would have selected the space coast and got myself a little house a block off the beach. But instead I decided to re-enter the workforce and so I selected Tampa. Also as I'm single and getting older but not dead yet, I thought I'd have more socializing possibilities here. But either place is pretty nice, depending, as the above poster says, on what lifestyle you're looking for.
