I'm moving from Miami to Rockledge for a new job (defense contractor, not space-related). How is this place in terms of crime and future job prospects for a computer/IT person?

I am always hearing that the Space Coast is deteriorating and will be dead within the next couple years due to budget cuts and dropping of space programs. Is it a good place to stay for many of years (i.e. buying a home, getting comfortable, etc) or just for employment until I get relocated or until it runs its natural course?

I was just up there not long ago and it seemed a little depressed. Your not far take a drive up there for the day.

Some parts of Rockledge are nice and others are not. I love the area by the Indian River, but even some of the side streets there are hit or miss.
I would RENT first to see how the ending of the space program affects the area. And yes, drive up and visit it.

I am going to end up renting up there. Just from Google maps, it doesn't look like much, unlike Fort Lauderdale. I just hope it's not too "country" like some parts of central Florida.

brevard really depends where you are:
viera and parts of north melbourne are not country at all

beach side is very beach oriented

rural parts of cocoa, pt st john, titusville and mims as well as grant and valkaria are country.

viera has all the new shops and growth right now

I'm having a difficult time looking for a good apartment to rent in Rockledge. Most of the new development there appears to be homes/condos for sale. Anyone have recommendations? Preferably close to Cape Canaveral.

I don't know if it is close enough for you, but i love Cocoa village. It is a walkable neighborhood w/ restaurants, some shops, and park. Plus it is right by the Indian river for great scenery.

I have lived in Brevard County since I was 15. Graduated from Rockledge High School. I have also lived almost everywhere in Brevard south of Port St John and I believe Rockledge to be the best city I have lived in. Its a great community! I love it.
