I went on a tour of Tibet about 8 or 9 years ago. With six other intrepid travelers (4 Germans, a Canadian and another American), we went by Minibus from Kathmandu to Changdu on the border and the through Gyantse, then a couple of other towns and finally onward to Lhasa. On the way we stopped off at Milarepa's cave. Our guide was Tibetan, and as can be expected, very critical and full of disdain for the Chinese.
I recommend visiting Tibet. The food is good, the people are hospitable, the sights are interesting.

Although I cherish all the schools of Buddhist wisdom, the Tibetan Vajrayana in not the one closest to my heart. Having said that, I still deeply admire the great spirituality and devotion of the Tibetan people. May their troubles come to an end speedily!
