Lewiston. The clear winner. Beautiful scenery, from the escarpment to the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Quaint walkable downtown with wonderful shops and restaurants. Less snow than Boston or Chicago. A half hour from downtown Buffalo and only a wee bit over an hout to Toronto. Peach Festival, Jazz Festival and Artpark, what more could anyone desire.
I'd probably choose North Buffalo or the Elmwood Village, maybe Kenmore. I'm too much of a city boy to live far out in the outer suburbs. I like it that Buffalo is still affordable compared to Boston and New York, which makes it better to raise a family really. Jobs and recreation for young people are a bit scarce though.
I'd pick Ellicottville without a doubt. Absolutely gorgeous area. Great for winter sports/activites and festivals in summer. Proximity to casino and Allegany SP. Leaves in the fall. Excellent social/bar scene for a small town.
I love the southern tier or rural, wooded, hilly parts with close proximity to a small city/village and within a couple hours of a bigger city (like Buff, Roch, or Erie). Although I don't care much about shopping options, proximity to a Wegman's is pretty important. I love the area surrounding Jamestown a lot, also love the Naples area near Rochester. Either one is ideal.
West side of Wyoming County... plenty of beautiful country but not out in the boonies, Lancaster is only 20-25 minutes away I.E... Plus, its easy to hit the finger lakes region from there too...

Count me for Ellicotville too.
I guess it really depends on what is important to you. Good bit of snow or A LOT of snow, close to big town/city/suburbs or more rural, lakes & state parks or shopping & dining options. Not really a wrong answer in there just depends on the individual.
Thanks for the replies, and ideas. my wife (and three children 5,3,1,) may move up there in about eight years. she has friends in eden. I think the area there is nice, but was curious as to other pretty areas. wife attended houghton college. Its pretty there, but not much in the way of werk. Letchworth was magnificant. Aurora, and the surrounding farmland looked pretty especially on the plateaus. Keept hem coming and tell me why you so love the areas you speak of!
