I've lived in the South but grew up here in WNY... we aren't racist. But there is more segregation it seems up here. Much more friendly here than in the South.
I'm sure you can find it anywhere but I don't believe it is obvious. We have areas of the city where there are gangs that are predominantly African American or Hispanic. If you are just sightseeing through the area I doubt you'll have any trouble at all.
there are racial divisions within Buffalo that have their origins back during the first wave of immigrations during the 1890's. What has developed is racial ghettos- certain areas that have a high concentration of a certain race. For instance in North Buffalo there is a large population of Italian-Americans.
Are we racist? I do not like to believe so... but there are divisions which may speak to the contrary. It is sort of the same as NYC there are divisions and some tension but nothing too distressing.

I totally disagree. Despite the fact we have done away with institutional segregation for a very long time (much longer than most of the South), I find that in the South, Black and White people get along far better. I see White people going to restaurants with Black people all the time, here just about never.
At any rate, you won't feel any racism here. It's a day trip, if you get a moron who doesn't respect your differences take your business elsewhere, but I strongly doubt that you would have to do that.

You're welcome to your own view as I would have to assume you have had different experiences than I but from what I've seen in the south this isn't even close to the truth. I went to college in the south & lived there for almost 10 years & this just isn't true. Yes we have racism in the north but it is nothing like what I have seen in the south (especially in small town south). Go visit any small town in East Texas or in one of the Gulf Coast states and you'll see that majority of whites still view blacks as a second class citizen. The Robert E Lee & Jefferson Davis statues in the town squares along with the random Confederate flags are enough to make your skin crawl. I've seen many a white man carry on a normal cordial conversation with a black man only to refer to him using the N word (or worse) as soon as he left. Though it may not be out in the open as much as it was 50 years ago the hatred, prejudice & persecution still runs deep in the south.
