Alright, so the city has been talking about the 2024 Olympics being co-hosted by Buffalo, Ny and Toronto, Canada. It seems a bit optimistic, but I want to know what other people think.
Would it help the local economy?
Does Buffalo have the infrastructure to support such a major event?
Hamilton has put up some resistance as an event destination for the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto. The Montreal Olympics is still fresh in our minds... personally, I think an Olympic bid would be a disaster at least right now for the region. I think the area between the GTA and Buffalo can support an Olympics, but infrastructure within Toronto is a big concern right now and I'd like to see how we handle the Pan Am Games before considering Olympics.
The Olympics are a civic self-esteem thing for cities, but they have generally left their host cities mired in millions of dollars of debt and a bunch of left-over sports facilities to maintain or figure out what to do with. Economically, they seem to be a bad deal for the host cities.
A new stadium could be built downtown and be used by the bills after the olympics. During the olympics, the Ralph Wilson Stadium could be used, but demolished afterwards.
Olympics are usually long-term financial disasters for the host cities, I doubt Buffalo would be an exception as it is struggling already.
