Buffalo gets a lot of snow. Are there positives with that? Perhaps slighly warmer temperatures that allow it to snow so much more? Or am I wrong about that one too.

What are some positives/negatives about lake-snow effect and Buffalo?

I don't know about it being positive or negative. But often the lake effect snow blows in on a narrow band. If you are in the band you get a LOT of snow. If you are not you might be only a short distance away and see little to no snow.

Well if you are in the path of lake effect snow. You will have alot of snow possible bad whiteouts , While ten minutes away you will have clear skies with sunshine. That is why WNY weather is bipolar.

I would say the storms are the negative. The positive to the lake is milder (not as hot), less humid, and sunnier summers than most of the rest of the northeast.

sorry,
It's the cold air blowing across the lake that causes lake effect snow.

When you/we get winds from Canada we call them "Chinook winds"
as they blow across the lace they lick up moisture.
then as they hit land there is a updraft clouds form, next snow.

This is different from your AVG snow fall where you see the temps come up a little when it snows. these storms come from the south. Chinook winds come from the north.

It's tons of fun when you get 5 feet of snow dumped on you, and have to go to work.

Meanwhile the national guard is driving up your street with hummers, and they too get stuck in the street.

This happened a couple years ago in West Seneca, and my parents in the north towns had zero snow.

LES = basically being done as soon as the lake freezes over. Anything after that is a blizzard. [I prefer LES]. Given we had no lake freeze and little snow at all last year, I wish we had - that LES we missed is what gives us a good portion of our moisture. A positive of LES is that we need the moisture it gives us, if by snow or rain.

Well, I like the snow period. I swear that is a band of snow down transit road from north forest to sheridan. It could be open, but as soon as I hit transit, boom, its there.

If I remember right, that big october storm was lake effect.

Funny, being from chicago, we would have the same thing. Same wind pattern, same dumping on our neighbors in indiana. When it was going to snow hard, I left for work a lil earlier. Did that here in Buffalo, and found no one was around. They all decided to be remote. Learned my lesson for this year.
