As others have said, Amherst is a great town with good schools. You can't go wrong in Amherst.

As far as the foundation problems they've experienced it's hit & miss in different parts of the community. Here's a map:

Amherst Central is a district with decent test scores (meaning the inhabitants have some level of wealth and credentialed education) but those scores are declining (as is the case with most 1st ring burbs). I personally would be skeptical about buying anywhere in a 1st ring burb and paying too much. Do whatever you see fit.
