I am planning to move to buffalo on a 1 year contract job. Was wondering how safe is the location near university station Main Street almost right next to the Tops market and walgreens there on Capen blvd . My wife will be stay at home.
In the day I know the area would be decent but at night how is it? Are there issues during the day as well?
The area is good for me commute wise and right to the border of Amherst without being in it actually. is it safe esp for my wife who would go to the nearby tops/walgreens to get some stuff?
Amherst is safe including the area you are talking about, as is most of the city of Buffalo including the area around the University station. You shouldn't have any problems day or night. The only part of the Buffalo metro area that is dangerous is parts of the east side of the city around Genesee, Broadway, and Sycamore Streets, but the area you are talking about is far away from there.

I see constant breakins in an around that area...Are muggings/violent crime common? ..esp between say 7am-7pm. Is the university station area patrolled by Uni police?
I have friends who live around there (on one of the streets off of Englewood). They've had no problems by day or night. I would exercise a bit more caution at night, but that is true just about anywhere. The University Heights has had some crime issues recently, but mostly farther south in the more student-oriented areas. North of Niagara Falls Boulevard, the homes seem to be much more occupied by professionals and families, without the frat houses and crowded student rentals you see on the streets farther south.

Thats good to know because the spot crime reports are a bit worrying. The location is bang on the border of Amherst the safe place n Buffalo the unsafe one
I guess next to University Plaza . I mean i saw on spot crime issues happening every alternate week or so...
If your wife has a car, she'd probably be happier going out the Blvd, to the mall to shop. Big Wegman's as well. What you get on the city line is young punks who like to make trouble - shoplifting, fights, etc, You get drunk University kids on weekends (many coming in from North Campus). Week & Daytime? Rather sleepy. She's also on a busline for Williamsville across Main St.
Friends I have in the heights haven't had any problems except a stolen bicycle or two.
