You know when I go down to the canalside area, and down to the chippewa area during the day and even early evening, I've been wondering hth are these businesses around the area stay open?

There still isn't exactly a lot of foot traffic downtown, not a huge corporate presence downtown, no fortune 500 companies in the metro area or downtown, and the only fortune 1000 company we have is M & T Bank...the next big corporate players now are Deleware North and New Era.....everyone else is employed by small businesses, or companies that don't have a huge presence here, and the medical campus employees.

And still not a ton of people travel from the suburbs into the downtown area enough to pump money into the downtown area....and more or less because people in the Buffalo-Niagara region do not have a lot of disposable income....we are not a wealthy region by any stretch and near the bottom of major US metro's of more than 1 million people in median income and per capita income. It cant help that Canadians are staying on their side more and more due to the dollar

So with all of this, I wonder how sustainable this all is

That's exactly what I'm saying. Sure, all of the construction makes everyone feel good, but eventually the bills have to be paid. Andrew Cuomo, in his quest to be some sort of hero, is pouring billions (yes plural)of taxpayer's money into Buffalo. But where are the real jobs that all this construction is supposed to support?

As you can see now, with the former HSBC tower, if someone doesn't show up with the subsequent 4000 jobs to fill the space, that it will be a failure.

NYC is only holding on b/c of its presence as an alpha global city which makes businesses want to have a presence here regardless of the terrible business climate.

Isn't that one of the reasons upstate has resentment towards Albany and NYC -- b/c NYC is much less sensitive to bad economic policy than the rest of the state?

I think it has more to do with political ideology or aspects, which includes economic development. With that said, Upstate NY governments has the chance to change through some degree of consolidation, in order to decrease costs for services.

If "business climate" was the only cause for growth and power, then Salt Lake City, Charlotte, Omaha, and Fargo would be #1,2,3 and 4.

Good "business climate" doesn't trump geography or history, which drives types of jobs (energy related in Texas, for example) and demographics (birth rate and migration).

Sudden concentrated losses of heavy industry and general deindustrialization during the 1970s thru 1990s have left most of the rust belt in a demographic ditch, essentially losing a significant portion of an entire generation (and their children) when young people moved away from the industrial heartland of the US. The decimation of the US steel industry probably resulted in 30 to 50 thousand job losses in Buffalo alone between 1982 and 1984. There was NOTHING Buffalo itself could have done to prevent it, and little to replace it as there were millions affected across the US.

For an idea of the impacts of the demographic bomb, if Erie County birth rate, for example, met the national average of 12.5 per thousand, natural growth would be an additional 1500 residents per year (based on current population). If it was that of NYC it would increase by over 2700 per year. If it was that of Utah it would increase by 6000! Other counties in WNY also have even lower rates than Erie.

So even assuming current population, over the last 30 years WNY lost between 45,000 to 100,000 of natural population growth - much higher if it were at the phenomenal rate of Utah.

How can the Buffalo police & the suburbs depts. afford to keep buying new Tahoe's & Dodge Chargers every year ?
In Las Vegas, Arizona cities, Denver, San Diego , Even Los Angeles etc... most of the Police cars are still old Crown Vics
they keep them 7 to 10 years before they get replaced, it's cheaper to replace tires, brakes, a transmission,
even a new motor then it is to buy a police package Tahoe for $70,000 to $80,000

Is this even true, as they don't do this in Syracuse?

Every time I watch the Buffalo TV news & read Buffalo news on line
All you see are 2015, 2016 BPD black & white Tahoe's, Lancaster PD, Hamburg PD etc.. too .read the city & town council meeting minutes. The police cars out west are mostly old crown vics, paints faded , lot's of scratches & dents, but there still going
and you do see a newer Explorer Suv or 2 once in while, but the majority are crown vics. and those cities do have millions
in there capital replacement fleet funds to go buy new police cars every year, but they don't like to waste or throw money
down the drain
