Why did Bass Pro decided to build there new store on the other side of the river in Canada ?
Instead, Buffalo taxpayers get's 200 million of foot bridges over ankle high water canals, empty streets, grass, grass and more grass, but each lawn has it's own name. Double fencing, a Police sub station, more lighting, more security & more police patrols will cost taxpayers even more. The more they talk about Rebirth, the more people are leaving for greener places and were not talking about the lawns. I have never seen so many people on Facebook who left recently or are planning to leave because Buffalo don't have a future. Speaking of rebirth, Buffalo's been losing population every single year for the last 40 years and Buffalo's tallest building is all vacant and bankrupt and they can't even auction it off, because no one wants it, It 38 floors high, you can't miss it.

As explained on here many times, Buffalo doesn't have the luxury of annexing unincorporated land/communities into its city limits in the way that growing cities in other regions have. Some suburbs in the area that people may be moving to, would just be outer city neighborhoods in many other cities in the country. To understand what I am referring to, just take a look at the square mileage of cities in a metro with a similar population as the Buffalo metro and in particular, those in other regions.

It appears that the metro population has stabilized and hopefully, it will start growing again.

Again more public money for mostly parks. That should be a major concern that's no
private investment, but when you have a City Control Board & County Control Board
for nearly 10 years and insanely high taxes & regulations, that's the results

It is nice to see that they are looking to improve the infrastructure of parks and roadways. Improvement of infrastructure is something that is needed across the country.

No thanks to Esmonde and the Buffalo News. Donn Esmonde is a hypocrite of the first order. He was one of the cretins who boosted the Bass Pro scam and then wailed lamentations at its demise along with his employer the Buffalo News, Tony Masiello (former mayor) and Joel Giambra (former county exec). He also used his op-ed column in the News to attack the people opposed to the Bass Pro scam as stupid, short-sighted, and provincial (I remember that because I was among the opponents). Well, guess what, we were right and he was wrong.

Esmonde is correct, however, that Buffalo's turn-around began with the Bass Pro debacle. Within a year and a half, Buffalo had a new mayor, Byron Brown, the city's first African American mayor, who brought a different perspective on development. Under Masiello, the only part of Buffalo that mattered was Downtown and a few choice streets in the Delaware District, and he only ventured out into the neighborhoods during mayoral election cycles. He was a "silver bullet" guy who never met a giant economic development project requiring huge amounts of public monies/give aways that he didn't like, and he was special pals with the deep-pocketed developers who made millions "redeveloping" downtown. Bass Pro was a perfect "silver bullet" project guaranteed to make big $$$ for developers.

Amen. Those Bass Pro days were embarrassing, was unreal it took officials years figuring out a deal to bribe them into locating in Buf and then thankfully fail. I remember thinking Buffalo could have offered to rename the city BassPro as an extra bribe incentive. But it was just as great the revolution it created from a grass roots level demanding that a waterfront needs no big box bribe... the waterfront is the attraction. And today, what a great, simple, attractive area Canalside is, seems to be the gathering place now for Buf, the place to be, even winter.

I totally agree. Even the plans to fill the the Outer Harbor with a convention center and other big ticket developments have gone by the boards, and instead they just laid down a bike path and did improvements at the Small Boat Harbor and Gallagher Beach, which is like spending pennies rather than dollars. Instead of spending hundreds of millions to tear down the Skyway and/or build a connecting expressway to I-90, for example, they improved Ohio Street and let a private company operate a bike ferry. It's not like the Outer Harbor attracts many people except ice fishermen during the winter.

BTW, the Buffalo Garden Walk is this week-end. It's a great way to get lots of peeks at Buffalo's West Side, which is filled with homes grand and modest, in gentrified neighborhoods like Allentown and in immigrant neighborhoods scattered through out the West Side. It's gonna be hot, but it looks like it will be dry and sunny.
