Rochester and Buffalo's suburbs are very similar, but Rochester does have a higher proportion of upscale suburbs. With some research of the latest Census data, these are the top 3 zip codes in terms of median household income in each metro area according to 2014 Census data found on American Factfinder. I also included the median household income in 2000 with the percent increase between 2000 and 2014.
So, Rochester's and Buffalo's suburbs with the highest household median income are very similar in their respective incomes as of 2014. However, Buffalo's suburbs have grown their median incomes since 2000 more than Rochester's suburbs have. Keep in mind these are only the top 3 suburbs in each metro. Rochester's suburbs overall are nicer IMO.
While these increases of income are certainly obtainable for many individuals, 56.1% for an entire town kind of raises a flag. What do you attribute to the drastic rise of the whole town?

I think that the Clarence area is one of those exurban areas that has seen housing growth similar to Victor in the Rochester area or the Baldwinsville and the northern Clay/Cicero areas in the Syracuse metro. In turn, it has likely attracted solidly to upper middle class residents.
That Lake View zip code is likely experiencing the same thing and I believe that some Bills players/coaches/staff live in that area.

What you also have to keep in mind is that Monroe county's median household income grew by 17% between 2000 and 2014, and Erie County's grew by 32% during the same time period.

Interesting and I'm curious as to what that is attributed to....

How does Rochester figure in our board for Buffalo? For the many years I have lived here, It has always been "The 8 counties of Western NY". Rochester is NOT in one of these counties. Rochester is in Monroe County ( farther east). It sure is "upstate" but I would toss it off the list of "western NY"

I'm sure that years ago when Buffalo was much larger than Rochester, that Monroe county was included in western NY too. But that was then. Orleans County IS part of the Rochester metro. Genesee County was also until they created the micropolitan designation. They are also part of the Finger Lakes Economic Council. (you know that STEM park that is being built in Alabama? The Finger Lakes region sponsored that). Genesee County is also heavily tied to Rochester. More than twice as many commuters travel to and from Monroe county as they due to Erie. Of course, the western side of those counties are tied to Erie, but officially they go with RMA.
Remember that counties are tied together by economics. That just happened when Yates County recently joined the RMA, so Rochester's influence across upstate appears to be growing.
