I think if we also included Rochester into the WNY equation.....Pittsford would be #1 by far.

Rochester and Buffalo's suburbs are very similar, but Rochester does have a higher proportion of upscale suburbs. With some research of the latest Census data, these are the top 3 zip codes in terms of median household income in each metro area according to 2014 Census data found on American Factfinder. I also included the median household income in 2000 with the percent increase between 2000 and 2014.

Buffalo
14051 East Amherst
2000 income: 88,317
2014 income: 106,710
Percent Increase: 20.8%

14032 Clarence Center
2000 Income: 64,073
2014 Income: 100,042
Percent Increase: 56.1%

14102 Marilla
2000 Income: 66,953
2014 Income: 97,000
Percent Increase: 44.9%

Rochester
14534 Pittsford
2000 Income: 87,126
2014 Income: 105,608
Percent increase: 21.2%

14506 Mendon
2000 Income: 78,612
2014 Income: 92,206
Percent Increase: 17.3%

14472 Honeoye Falls
2000 Income: 71,884
2014 Income: 91,356
Percent Increase: 27.1%

So, Rochester's and Buffalo's suburbs with the highest household median income are very similar in their respective incomes as of 2014. However, Buffalo's suburbs have grown their median incomes since 2000 more than Rochester's suburbs have. Keep in mind these are only the top 3 suburbs in each metro. Rochester's suburbs overall are nicer IMO.

Good information and if I'm not mistaken, 14051 may be the most affluent zip code in Upstate NY. There may be zips in suburban areas in other metros like Niskayuna, Bethlehem(Delmar) and the Fayetteville-Manlius area, among perhaps a few others.

Pittsford Central is the most affluent school district in Upstate NY.

The bulk of them are public sectors workers and they work for the City, Town, County, State and School Districts, that's why the Property Taxes are so high and keep going up in WNY

This brings to mind the question---just where does western NY begin and end?

Good question, but I think Rochester is or should be included in WNY.

What could be the issue is that an area can be in multiple regions/sub regions. So, some may use those that are "comfortably" in a region versus an area that may be identified as being in more than one region.

I guess that these very small Upstate NY zips have a higher median household income than 14051: 12438 Zip Code - USA.comâ„¢

12063 Zip Code - USA.comâ„¢

13087 Zip Code - USA.comâ„¢

The zip code 12438 had 59 people in 2010, 12063 had 444, and 13087 had 168. 14051 in contrast had 19,533. So, yes, those zip codes did have higher median incomes, but East Amherst has many more people.

On another note, the zip code 14085, Lake View, grew in population by 24% between 2000 and 2010. Its household median income grew from 58,438 in 2000 to 88,645 in 2014, over 50% growth. Does anyone know why or how Lake View has grown so much?

Just noticing that Pittsford has 29,405 people, 50% more than East Amherst
