I found this article interesting for a city that is talking about supporting two new stadiums one for the Bills, and one for the Sabres. Maybe it is wishful thinking. We have the final four of NCAA hockey, coming to Buffalo, and commanding top dollar prices.
The community did not support it, and the attendance was 13k in a 19k arena.
Like I have thought, there is not enough money in the area to support a big event, and this will be a big eyesore on the area. Not even taking into effect that the key bank center is very dated.
To be honest, I think it was likely a combination of things. Marketing comes to mind, as I’m wondering as to how many people even knew that Buffalo was hosting the Frozen Four.
Second, is college hockey really that big in the Buffalo area? I know that Canisius and Niagara are Division 1, but do they really have a good following in the area? I ask this as someone that attended 2 schools known for their relatively strong hockey following at the D1 and D3 levels.
Third, timing may be a factor, as the NHL Playoffs started on Thursday and some that would possibly attend, like those across the Niagara River, likely turned their attention to that versus thinking about NCAA Hockey.
So, while ticket prices were likely a factor, I’m curious if other things came into play as well.
Was anyone really expecting a sellout? We're talking about college hockey here, not college football. The community will support the Bills and Sabres no matter what, even with how poor both teams have played in recent history.

It should be a sellout.
We have hockey fatigue, the Canadian fans who frequently attend sabres games are not interested in college hockey how they are with the CHL/OHL and the Tix prices were too much.
If that is even true, I don't think the attendance in regards to the Frozen Four has a simple, one aspect answer.
I tried giving multiple reasons why it wasn't a success
