While there may be some hangover from the Cavaliers because they're 3 hours away and it's the same state as the Knicks and MSG broadcasts games in the Buffalo area, well, Toronto is not even 2 hours away in normal traffic. Was just curious, especially with a World Title now.
IIRC, there was a big push when the team launch in the 90s to promote them as the "local team" for WNY. They had a deal with Empire Sports Network to broadcast some of the games. I'm far from an expert but it didn't really seem to take off. Maybe the national boundary is too much of an impediment. Plus, booming Cosmopolitan Toronto and Rust Belt Buffalo are pretty different, so it's hard to feel like you are in the same region even though they are geography close. At least with Cleveland there is the bigger great lakes rust belt brother ties and NYC shares the same state. Plus those teams (NBA and MLB) all the history behind them.
It'll probably be easier to push the idea of a regional team of sorts after having a championship. People like underdogs, but they generally like them when it looks like they're going to win.
