If people believe that those are peer cities to Buffalo, then they are just telling you to not take them seriously.

I’ll entertain for a bit...You could do that for just about any city. That doesn’t mean that those cities are peers to Buffalo.

I know the title of this thread is "Buffalo Deserves More" but I don't believe the intention was having more trolls or disgruntled expat responses. No city deserves the bashing that the regulars post on this forum.

Every day for the last 10 days I have taken bike rides through many Buffalo neighborhoods, along the Shoreline Trail, Scajaquada Trail, North Buffalo Rails to Trails, and throughout most of downtown, North Buffalo, and the West Side.

The city and neighborhoods are gorgeous, 99% of the bike lanes and trails are comprehensive and excellent, the city itself is full of people and busy, and the weather has been exceptional. All of the parks have been full of people enjoying the weather and the atmosphere. Canal side and the nearby waterfronts have been busy no matter what day or time of day I visited.

I don't know what universe the negative posters live in, all I know is what I see and experience TODAY in the city, and I very much see it as an excellent place to visit and live in.

And of course loads of abandoned and demolished buildings couldn’t ever happen in a booming, shiny, rich, sunbelt city like Dallas, right?

Oh wait. Do a YouTube search on “abandoned Dallas” and you’ll see hundreds of videos. Abandoned malls in Dallas. Abandoned hospitals in Dallas. Abandoned schools in Dallas. Abandoned warehouses in Dallas...

Feast your eyes on beauty of Dallas!

https://www.chicagofed.org/region/co...ment/data/pcit

Oh jeez. Buffalo isn’t looking so hot on that Distressed Cities Index.

But on the positive side, the following cities are also classified as among the most distressed:
  • Baltimore
  • Chicago
  • Cincinnati
  • Cleveland
  • Detroit
  • Memphis
  • Milwaukee
  • Philadelphia
  • Pittsburgh
  • Saint Louis

So basically the entire AFC North division and most of the NFC North Division are “distressed”.

I’m sorry, but in my personal opinion, there are some great cities in that group. Shiny new cities are too crowded, expensive, hollow, and sterile. Old cities have character, real people, great neighborhoods, families, traditions, great history, and authentic local culture. If that means they’re “distressed”, then i’ll take “distressed” any day.

P.S. It’s also worth noting that the Distressed Cities List isn’t concentrated in the Great Lakes. We see multiple distressed cities in California, Texas, and Virginia. We even see one in Arizona and one in Florida. Apparently the Sunbelt isn’t always so shiny.

P.S.S. And on a sad note, the Distressed score has a solid correlation with the percentage of Catholic residents, according to a source I checked. Whether it’s Cajuns in Louisiana or Hispanics in the Southwest or Polish-Americans in Chicago and Buffalo, apparently religion is a factor in how “distressed” a city is.
