Tops is unionized and Price Chopper isn't, this should be interesting.
Some interesting data:
Tops has 162 stores and 14,000 employees, an average 86.5 per store (union)
Price Chopper has 130 stores and 18,000 employees, an average 138.5 per store (non union)
That's not the true store population as the numbers are company wide and include office and warehousing, etc. Tops, for instance has 600 truck drivers and warehouse workers.
For comparison, Wegmans has 104 stores and 52,000 employees, an average 500 per store ( mostly non union, although I believe the truck drivers and warehouse personnel are union)
"The massive, three-year project benefited from $76.5 million in state funds "and $16 million in historic tax credits via M&T Bank in a massive undertaking to modernize the campus and find profitable uses for the monumental structure," according to a news release at the time.
Last month, five current and former employees announced they are suing the hotel and conference center, claiming hotel managers withheld in excess of $800,000 in unpaid or misdistributed gratuities, improper wages, and unpaid commissions."
When the economy was rocking Buffalo did well, but now that things have hit a rough patch, to say the least. All those high paying jobs that left and were replaced by call centers and other low paying jobs, cannot support an upscale enterprise like this. Until a more business and tax friendly atmosphere prevails this will be the norm. Douglas Jemal is the savior of Buffalo, everyone should go to sleep and pray that he continues in good health and his hopes and dreams for the area come to fruition.
