I find it far more depressing that the gallery will be closed for the next 2+ years than I do exciting that it will eventually re-open in expanded form. Building the new Lincoln Parkway addition while keeping the gallery accessible prior to 2022 would've been the best of both worlds, but given only the two choices of 'close and add on' vs. 'status quo', I'd take the latter any time.

"It was announced during the ceremony that Jeffrey Gundlach, a Western New York native who is the CEO and founder of Doubleline Capital, will donate another $10 million, bringing his total donation to the project to $62.5 million dollars. Sounds like an expat (who lives in LA) is giving back to the community." We need more like him.

Headline of the Buffalo News the other day cited a total cost of about 100 million more than what Gundlach donated; not sure if there were other less well-heeled donors involved, but. Gundlach comes off a bit egomaniacal, unsurprisingly. I'm fine with us not having more like him. Buffalo's art scene would be better/more vibrant if there were more 'thriving' small galleries. Putting disproportionate focus on the AK/soon-to-be AKG isn't necessarily in the best interests of Buffalo's artists or Buffalonians in general. That's often how it is with 'silver bullet' projects, though. Organic, neighborhood-driven activity is more important to the health of the city.
