Niagara Falls is considered to be a poor, rust belt city. Looking at the employment stats and much of the crime, I understand why one could make that claim. The poverty rate is 27.5%, and the median household income is $35,995 a year.

Niagara Falls also has around 875 violent crimes per every 100,000, as well as 4,100 property crimes.
However, the murder rate is 5.1 per every 100,000 (mean over last 4 years).

Compared with other "ghettos" rust belt, this is very low.

Buffalo, NY: 18.3
McKeesport, PA: 41.7
York, PA: 29.6
Youngstown, OH: 30

What is Niagara Falls doing to cut down its murders? Other places might want to implement the strategy too.

Too cold - perhaps many died from chemical exposure. Did you check for Ageg of population? places with the highest percentage og folks in the 18-24 age group have the higher percentage of crime,

In other words taking one or two stats is amateurish at best-read the concept of independent variables to get this right. For example 99% of heroin addicts were drinking milk as youths.... what does that tell you? Nothing,

Niagara Falls is not doing great in that department this year - after only 4 murders in 2018 and 4 in 2019, so far this year they are up to at least 15! Thats 31 per 100k.

Almost every city in the US is seeing an increase this year. Youngstown is now at 43 per 100k so far, for example.

This here...

As for the city, there are middle class parts like DeVeaux near the town of Lewiston and much of LaSalle to the east, as well as Hyde Park. So, the city, in spite of whatever issues, isn't completely poor(actually most people aren't "poor" in the city).

I don't frequent casino's, but I would think there are a lot of low skilled jobs. Maybe the "would be muggers" got jobs instead?

OK, I just noticed something that was under my nose this whole time.

The violent crime rate of 900 and property crime rate of 3,858 can be partly attributed to tourism. Although the population is only around 48,000, there are often way more people in the city. With more people, there will be more crimes committed, but it goes into the rate for 48,000 residents.

Niagara Falls was ranked ahead of Buffalo and Rochester on some Upstate-related website for the 'honor' of being the most crime-ridden upstate municipality either last year or the year before. The murder count may be relatively low (in years prior to this one anyway), but the miscellaneous crimes are many. And, man, there are some odd, stereotypically Florida Man-esque crimes that get committed there--for many years, a local radio station's morning show has done a weekly 'Niagara Falls Police Blotter' segment which highlights some of the stranger crimes, and they've never lacked for material.

So, no, NF is no success story. And the locals are responsible for the vast majority of the crimes, as the visitors tend to be middle-class families from Ohio and whatnot, not really the crime-committing demographic.

As for 'would be muggers' getting jobs at the casino...I play poker professionally and have thus spent a lot of time at Seneca Niagara (the casino in Niagara Falls, NY), and I can say that there are some great people who work there (or did work there, pre-pandemic), so that's [more than] a bit insulting. Majority of the poker room employees are not from NF itself--many are from closer to Buffalo, although there are a decent number from the Falls or Niagara County more generally. The 'low skill' dealing jobs, especially in poker but also at certain table games, actually require a fair bit of mental acuity, as lots of quick calculations are required. Some of the poker dealers I've met/semi-befriended have been pretty intelligent people. Of course, that room has been shuttered since March 16th, and there's no guarantee it'll ever return.

Really? It's mostly a hotel and resturants. And why couldn't a would be mugger be able to get trained as a dealer. They might feel right at home there

^I’m thinking the Senecas actually do a good background check on potential hires. I’m actually surprised that they are shut down, as the Oneidas still have their casinos running with precautions of course.

The Seneca casinos (Niagara, Buffalo Creek in downtown Buffalo, and I believe Allegheny in Salamanca, although I'm not 100% sure about that one) are open, but the Niagara Falls poker room is not, so therefore I haven't set foot in Seneca Niagara since March 16th (and I was there on the day it shut down). I've made a few sports bets at the downtown Buffalo casino, but they've never had poker at any point in their existence
