This is different territory in terms of select towns wanting to leave a county. Has anyone heard of any similar ideas in the state before?

"Poloncarz warned each town could pay a steep price in lost sales tax and other shared revenue if they left for another county."

Haha, love the threats. Hope these towns are able to achieve what they want. Sometimes in the relationship its best to part ways. Loooks like the abusive one in the relationship still wants to hold on. Smh.

On the contrary, I believe it will be Erie county who losses. The town get's to keep it's half of the sales tax generated in it's town. The state get's the rest. It would also cause a loss in population for Erie county

Well, between the two towns, there are 8,000 people or so. So, while it would be a loss, both towns are quite rural, which is a part of the reason they are looking to join Wyoming County.

Poloncarz never will pave roads out in Erie county out towards Marilla. They had signs on Bullis road begging.

Here is another article on this that includes the towns of Holland and Grand Island considering joining adjacent counties: https://www.timesunion.com/news/arti...article-ribbon

Those south towns leaving and Wyoming County assuming the burden of an additional 99 square miles (more than twice as large as the City of Buffalo) with a population of only 11,479, would actually be a relief to the remaining Erie County taxpayers.

But really, it's the age-old "country bumpkins" resenting being "told what to do" by the "city slickers." Throw in a little fear and racism in some by being led (or associated) with a county 14.1% Black (with a city at 36.9%) in towns only 0.2% Black (total Black in all of Marilla, Wales and Holland combined is only 33 people, 17 of them children). Even on Grand Island, I KNOW people who absolutely live lives of racial fear and animosity, who moved to GI purposefully because of it, and I have witnessed it shared by their neighbors. Its an escalation of the "us versus them" attitude, rather than a "we are all in it together" one.

Mostly suburban Grand Island also has a lot of nasty internal political fighting among themselves, and being an island many are very resentful of any "outsiders" who they blame for any and all of the island's ills. Joining another county isn't going to improve anyones lives (if GI thinks Niagara County would be a better manager, then they certainly haven't looked at how Niagara Falls is doing). With Grand Island, though, cooler heads will prevail as the island population continues to grow and diversify, even though the NIMBY attitude will continue to challenge changes.

Can't believe that some of you go so far to insert racism into this. I know many people who jave moved out to Boston, Eden, Marilla, Gasport, Hartland ect rather than stay in the larger towns and cities because they want space, the ability to have horses and raise chickens. Just because there may be fewer minorities out there does not enter the equation.
