I mentioned this in the Upstate Black/African American thread about the event they had on Saturday.

Buffalo actually has one of the highest percentages of Black owned business with fulltime employees in the country, according to this older list: https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/s...ned-businesses

Plus, there are resources such as these for such businesses in the area: https://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/...ed-businesses/

https://www.brownbagcertified.com/

Let alone the history of businesses on Jefferson.

Among others...So, there is a history of Black entrepreneurship in the city.

^As it should be. But I'm curious why NYS and northeastern cities were so low on the list. Southern were higher.

Bigger base(57% of Black people in the US live in the South and that percentage has never been below 50% and has been as high as 90% centuries ago(Hence, the Great Migration to the NE, Midwest and West, as to why cities in) and longer history, including segregation, which means you had no choice but to create your own businesses(though Urban Renewal and "Integration" played a part in a decline). It could also be a matter of entry into the market.

I have noticed quite a few black and Latino owned businesses her in Jax. My fantastic black owned, landscape design company has been totally amazing. As CK says and I totally agree, that there are more blacks percentage wise in the South vs the North after the great migration. I also find black people here to be much friendlier and easier to talk to.

To be clear, I'm referring to the Great Migration from the South to the North, as many of the black people in the Northeast, Midwest and out West generally have ties to the South.

For one, it takes around 4 months to set up an llc in NY. Took me two business days, here.

I'd say there's more underground/under-the-table stuff in NY vs. most states, which might explain some of the lower rate of black-owned businesses there. I could get all kinds of southern-sourced stuff from black people in Rochester, they'd have trucks full of fresh produce when the stores didn't have it, among many other items sourced in the South.

This is a big fact and gets to my point of migration over the years from the South to Buffalo and other Upstate NY cities. For instance, a lot of black people in the Rochester have roots in FL. So, many may go back home or have family/a connection and bring fruit or fish back and forth.

In Syracuse, during the warmers months you would occasional BBQ and Hot Dog stands set up or some churches may even sell dinners. So, you can find things like that here and there.

I will say that another thing that happened is that some businesses also weren’t passed down or faded out.

I’d say the biggest states you’ll see in this regard are SC, NC, GA, AL, FL and some from VA, MS and TN, among a couple of others(met a guy from NF whose parents were from AL and AR originally). I’d say that SC is probably the biggest contributor in terms of black migration to NY and that is throughout the state, although those other states I bunched with it are up there as well.
