My example was also pretty generous at least as far as Maryland taxes are concerned (though I'm not sure about No Virginia's rates). Realistically, if you owned a $300K house in Baltimore County your taxes would be $3300 not $1500 - $2000. With that in mind, if you purchased a $150K house here & paid $5K/yr in taxes it would still take 75 years of paying taxes before you matched what you originally paid for a $300K house.
$150K will get you a damn nice upper middle class house in most of metro Buffalo ............ you would be lucky to get a house in the ghetto for that price in most of DC/Baltimore.
I know what you are saying about the attitude toward the Southtowns. Personally, I love it but people I know from North Buffalo & Northtowns think I'm insane for living here. You would think we got 300" of snow/year the way they act.
One can earn a lot more in DC/Baltimore than in Buffalo too. Totally different levels of economic opportunities.

Thats true with some of the upper end jobs but not so much regarding your basic middle & upper middle class positions. A guy slaving away in a factory may get a little more down there but if they happen to work in a Union shop in NY the chances are they are getting better pay & benefits than in most other places in the country. Maybe a girl working the counter at the WaWa in suburban DC may get a little more than if she had the same job at Wilson Farms in Hamburg but the cost of everything else in the Baltimore/DC area is so much higher that their bigger paycheck goes less than the smaller one would here.
When we were thinking about moving from Texas the first 2 places we looked at were Baltimore & Boston. We quickly figured out that we couldn't afford to live the style of life we wanted in either area. My wife & I are both college educated professionals (I'm in supply chain management & she is a radiologist) & the difference in our pay between here & there was minimal ........ in fact she was even given a $7500 sign on bonus + they covered all of our relocation costs, none of the places in Maryland offered anything close to that. Her company also pays 100% of our health care (2 adults & 2 children), that alone makes up for any difference in pay.

One will earn way more money being a plumber or electrician in the DC metro than in Buffalo if your want to work smart, there is simply a much higher level of prosperity, and much more work to be had. Artist can sell their work much more easily and for a lot more money, musicians can be full time musicians since there is way more demand. Its easy for a copier rep to earn $100K plus in the DC area. People who have simply quit their job and started landscaping businesses are booming in the area. If all one want is to work at some gig for an hourly wage and go to work with a lunch pail then stay in Buffalo. If you want to grind & hustle with comparatively limitless earning potential, go to the DC area.
Some people are destined to live their lives as employees making others rich and living as a wage slave. Others are not. If you want to do the unconventional, go where there is much greater opportunity.

Wouldn't still even out due to more competition as well?
Oh well then, clearly you must have went to school for economics as your knowledge on the subject is so vast and extensive with such detail. Not general with no sweeping statements, some that make no sense what so ever, that completely prove your point...if there is one.
As we all know artists and musicians flock to high rents.

When they are successful and can sell sell they can own.
There is much more wealth in the DC metro than in Buffalo. Hands down, not even close.

Yes there's more wealth if you are in those fields which prosper in DC: Lobbying, Business, Finance. If you not a scheamer or a strong networker then you'r middle or lower management. If thats the case, that your not at the top of your field then you have just as much of a chance at making good money in Buffalo as you would in DC.
Not to mention you have to beable to afford to live there while your looking for a job.
Higher competition does matter. The more competive an erea the lessor your chances are at getting the job you want.
