We're moving to East Aurora in a few months and looking for any insights folks might want to share. Our one day there was just like something out of Mayberry. Not sure if that's a good thing or not, but it felt downright dreamy. It was a huge sense of relief after living in our manic-paced suburbs north of Seattle. Don't know what folks on other threads mean about no diversity- we were playing right next to a family of another race at the village playground. Thus far we've connected with the excellent Waldorf school there, found the natural food sections at Wegman's markets and Buffalo co-op, located a meditation/yoga center just out of town, found the great park in the village, and received an invitation to set up shop (acupuncturist and naturopathic doctor) with a chiropractor there on easy terms. Any leads on where to source the best rentals and/or where to rent at first? Thoughts on living right in the village vs. the "high road" to West Falls? How's the local music scene for singer-songwriters and over-40 garage bands? And most importantly- the one thing I will miss for sure is the great skiing and hiking where we are now- where do you hike near East Aurora, and which ski area do you go to and why?

Ugh, skiing here isn't good. I lived in Montreal for a long time, so I do indeed miss the ability to go to world class ski resorts for a weekend (even just a day). Most people go to Holiday Valley., which is a sorry excuse for a ski hill. It is poorly maintained, and not very big. The skiing all over the east coast is hardpack, not the powder you probably are used to. (I do enjoy hardpack alot more though, is rides quicker, but you can lose control or catch an edge far easier than in powder).

Local music scene is pretty good, I have to say. I play the drums for a local band (you guys may have heard of it, we are moderately popular, I'm not saying which one as I think that some people of this board would hit me if they had the chance ). It's not tough to find gigs, it's tough to find gigs that pay more than $50. Alot of bars here actually make you pay for your drinks!

East Aurora is a nice area. Very quiet, very Conservative (about 65% GOP in your Assembly district), mostly families and seniors. The more Liberal areas are far South of the city, Hamburg... (Chautaqua County is Liberal). There is a decent amount of hiking, Allegheny state park is one. What type of hiking are you talking about.

New York State Parks :: Knox Farm State Park

Try the Knox Farm; it was private, it is now public (NY state park). Great place for walking and many other activities.

Of course there are, there's alot of singles everywhere, I'm just saying compared to the rest of WNY...

East Aurora is your typical outer ring suburb... Conservative, slightly older than average, and more families.
