Why don't you Buffalonians just accept your city is in decline for economic reasons that aren't going to go away anytime soon. You still can live fulfilling lives. Seriously, you make fools out of yourself exulting over a handful of drab construction projects while say China is building an entire insterstate highway system, Dubai just opened the largest tower on the planet, and even here in the US in the midst of a recession numerous buildings are being built everywhere.
By the way, sorry to hear about the Statler towers. Maybe UB will revitalize your whole region then. Oops, massive budget cuts, so much for that. Maybe Bass Pro, if they can only sign on the dotted line. Or the Seneca Casino which is now a half-built project in suspension from what I've heard. (I haven't actually been to Buffalo for 2 years, when I finally moved out)
I have a better idea. How about ACCEPT REALITY for a change?
Man, how dare people in Buffalo have some optimism. It's almost like people have to put down the projects listed to make themselves feel better about their move or to convince themselves as to why they did or will move.
I think that Buffalo will be relevant again due to things like it proximity to resources, it's location, it still has a lot to offer in terms of things to do, it has some very good schools(including within city limits) and people that are willing to work hard.
okay as promised here are some links to back my earlier post. I did not include anything in Texas because I don't think anyone in the country would try to deny the explosive growth happening in Texas but I do work as a regional planner so maybe I take some things as common knowlege:
crap, i noticed some of the links aren't working hopefully you get what I'm saying but if anyone is really interested i'll repost whatever ones aren't working
I really don't mind people that live in WNY (or even NY in general) criticizing the region/state/politicians etc but I just don't understand why we should care what someone who has moved away & clearly given up on the area thinks?

Who cares what they are building in Texas? I lived in Texas for over a decade prior to moving to WNY. While I found the people for the most part to be decent & the cost of living to be low the heat, spiders, scorpions, snakes, humidity, traffic, poor quality public schools & hurricanes are just a few of the reasons why I would never move back. Everything isn't for everybody.
I also lived in Colorado Springs for several years ........ you want to talk about a boring place. I think they roll the sidewalks up at 7pm, which is insane for a city that size. At the end of the day the lack of trees/natural water sources & high cost of living drove me out of the state.
I own property in multiple places in NY and other areas, I've lived in Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, as well I have friends and family all over NY, Northeast, Canada so I have a specific interest in the development or lack of proper development in a place where potential abounds but poor leadership continues to hinder the best interests of its econmomic development. People cheerleading just out of some local patriotic duty will not change things, people voicing complaints and realizing things can and should be done better will change things.
To address your comments obviously I have not given up on the area or I wouldn't be posting the need for change, or ideas to make the area better.
I'll just ignore your sentiments about Colorado Springs because I'm not sure what they have to do with anything being discussed (and they're ridiculous coming from someone who lives in the Buffalo area)

I think he mentioned Colorado springs in terms of what they offer in comparison, even though it is a growing area.
The Statler Towers are being mothballed. Does this count as "development"? It will put SOME people to work. Those who drain the pipes, shut down the boilers, seal the building, put out the rat traps, etc. How long before the bricks start to fall down to the street below? Oh...sorry. That's already happening now. What a shame.
DO NOT fall for the realtor HYPE that Buffalo is a great place to buy investment or residential property! It's all going to crash when the government jobs start laying people off. Depend on it. Buffalo is Detroit-Lite! Get out while you can!
Private sector jobs are still LEAVING Buffalo and NYS. The only things being built in Buffalo are funded with Government bribes. So sad!!!

Private sector jobs left 97 out of the 100 largest metros last year so your comment has no relevant point. In fact the average PERCENTAGE of jobs lost nationwide last year was approx. 50% higher than the loss in Buffalo.
Fact: Buffalo has approximately 70,000 more PRIVATE SECTOR jobs (a 28% increease) now than it did in 1982. True other areas have added far more jobs during that same time period but equally true it is a LIE to say that the area has lost private sector jobs over the past quarter century.

Also, Detroit is way more desolate than Buffalo, as I had a great-grandmother that lived in the city of Detroit until the late 90's. Don't get me wrong, Detroit still has some nice neighborhoods actually, but I wouldn't call Buffalo Detroit-Lite.
