$23,754 over four years is more than $95k... for a bachelor's degree...
Who in their right mind would stay in VT and pay those prices? Is the state serious at all about keeping young people around?

That number includes room and board, not just tuition.
Here is the source:

Yup..college is expensive. That's why we are planning for it now so that when our kids are college age (assuming they want to go) we/they won't have to take out huge loans.

Yes, college is expensive. Why is UVM among the 5 most expensive public schools in the US? It's academic reputation certainly does not justify its cost... "Groovy UV" sure as hell isn't Penn State...

Well, one reason is that Vermont has historically, and continues to, underfunded higher education.

And over-funds the rest of our education.

My oldest considered UVM, UNH & several SUNY schools. He will be attending SUNY Stony Brook (USB) in the fall.
Compare - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/compare/items+2589+2838+3696 - broken link)

I found it shameful that a VT student attending USB would pay almost the same in out-of-state tuition as s/he would at UVM as a VT resident.

I went to a private college in Vermont and it was cheaper than UVM at the time. I could have gone to a University of Maine campus as a non-resident on campus and it too would have been cheaper than UVM by a fairly substantial amount. Rather incredible.

USB will be a far better education. I wouldn't send my kid to UVM for free.

Yikes. As a mom with three kids who will go to college within the next 8 to 18 years this is disheartening news. My husband and I are frugal, stay out of debt and save as much $ as we can, but there is no way we will be able to save over $300,000 for our kids' bachelor degrees on our Vermont salaries.

My oldest daughter wants to be a doctor and has already expressed interest in attending college in N.C. where her grandmother lives. The state schools there are excellent and cheaper than UVM. I really don't see any advantage of sending her to UVM when she could get an equal or better education for less money somewhere else.

NC state schools are very cheap or free if you have been a resident of NC for a number of years(6 or 10 I don't recall.)
