Great answer. I couldn't have summed it up better myself except to add that as a former NYC girl I made the move to the NY side of the lake after initially moving to Rutland and then Burlington for many of the same reason you cited. I had to laugh at how the original poster knocked people from Plattsburg which reminded me of how so many NYC residents knock Long Islanders, or as they like to mimic the accent of residents from that part of NY state, 'Lunge Aisland'. LOL![/font]

I have more than a few students from VT who claim it's cheaper to pay out-of-state tuition than to pay in-state at UVM. I haven't looked at the costs myself. I just know we have fewer hippes in Plattsburgh, and both areas have lots of hillbillies once you get outside the city.

Burlington may be more chic, but whenever there is really weird, heinous crime, it happens in Burlington. Burlington is kind of like the flannel Berkely or Austin. Kinda cool, but more than a little pretentious. Comparing Burlington and Plattsburgh is like comparing Dallas and Fort Worth. One has more shopping and restaurants, and is fun to visit, but the other is a more relaxed place to live.

I've only been to Plattsburgh as a kid to play hockey.
Not sure about weird, heinous crimes in Burlington. Feels extremely safe to me.
Hippies, yes. Extremely pretentious, yes. Worth the money? Absolutely not.

I was referring to the rape/murder at UVM, the kid who tried to break into a cemetery to make a skull bong, the guy who shot up an elementary school, or even the UVM kids rioting when the Red Sox won the world series. Watch the news for a couple of weeks....

Or the guy in Essex Junction who hired a kid to torch his building with people sleeping inside for the insurance money(of which I was a victim).

Burlington has become an insane place. Too many outsiders and not enough real Vermonters.

Explanation that I got was that VT used to the most conservative, rural, and well-behaved place in the country, and then they started to get lots of folks escaping Boston, NYC, etc... in the 70's, and they brought a lot their hippie and yuppie ways with them. Now they've procreated, and their ill-mannered offspring have congregated in Burlington. So you have a mix of the pretentious and the crazy.

So here's an update for those of you who probably don't care. I've been hanging out a on both sides of the lake the past few months....

I am big enough to admit when I have wrongly judged a town, and I think that Plattsburgh is looking more likely every day.

The chimichanga I had Smoked Pepper last night might have put it over the top.

DH is definitely going to be taking classes there and we just gotta figure out the logistics of living there and working in Burlington.

I'm not quite sure how to put this but, Burlington proper might just be "too cool" for me. I like the idea of Burlington, but on most days I'm happy to stay put on my side of the river in Winooski. Plattsburgh has a similar manageableness that I can dig. And the fact that I might be able to buy a house over there instead of renewing yet another $1500/mo lease is very very appealing. (If I can figure out how to get a frigging mortgage... that's another post)

I'll still work in Burlington, but I've found a lot of nurses that do the commute without a problem. It's an hour. The ones that don't like the drive have a little crash pad that they split each pay a few hundred a month for which might be an option.

I'm still thinking about it. But I want to say thanks to everyone for their input and apologize for whatever implied or actual Plattsburgh bashing I may have done in the past. I stand corrected!

This is great! I think the important thing is finding the place that works for you. Nearly every town works well for someone and there are good people living everywhere. It's not about what others think of a place, eh? Others might offer their own experiences and helpful facts, such as where to get a good mircrobrew or a haircut or statistics and tax rates. But that doesn't say anything about what your experience will be there.

When others criticize a place, and if we just look at it superficially, we may form assumptions. If you listened to posters here, you'd think Rutland was a drug-filled gang-ruled slum. But that doesn't at all resemble the congenial small city my husband and I ended up calling home, with good neighbors, an excellent co-op & farmers market, always-improving cultural offerings, and beautiful views of the scenery beyond.

I can be wooed with good Mexican food, too.

Thanks for the update, I enjoy reading about people's experiences.

I work with one of the nurses who commutes from NY and the only time she finds it a nuisance is in the winter.
