Getting an LLC in California? (cost, New York)

I have a part-time freelance business set up as an LLC in New York, where it's relatively painless to get one going. I'll be moving to California at some point in the next few years, and was wondering what setting up an LLC involves there as opposed to NY (paperwork-wise and cost-wise). I hear things can be pretty byzantine and expensive, but they also say that about NY.
